Skin Protection(15,16,24,26)

- Skin is a unique organ that is constantly exposed to oxidative stress from UV radiation, ozone and polluted environment.
- Chronic exposure to such environmental insults had been linked to a number of skin damages such as; photo-toxic injury and photo allergy skin, skin aging, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.
- Tocotrienols preferentially accumulates at the strata corneum of the skin. They provide first line of defense against free radicals generated in the skin by UV/ozone rays.
- Tocotrienols prevents skin aging and damage by oxidative rays.
- Being a more potent antioxidant, the tocotrienols neutralizes free radicals at a faster rate and hence protect tocopherols.
- Tocotrienols topically applied onto the skin was found to penetrate rapidly through the skin and the highest concentrations are found in the uppermost 5 microns.
- Tocotrienols-treated skin contained Vitamin E at concentration 7-30 fold higher than control values.
- Tocotrienols augments the efficacy of sunscreens containing compounds that reduce penetration of or absorb ultraviolet radiation.
- Gamma- and delta-tocotrienols inhibit skin melanin synthesis by suppressing constitutive and UV-induced tyrosinase activation.
